About Me
Hi I’m Thomas and I am currently a senior in high school enrolled in AP Studio Arts: 2-D Design. Throughout the year we have explored many different forms of art including photography, digital art, cinematography and animation. As an artist, I love to find something or someone's place in nature. Rather than manipulate a situation to make it look good in front of a camera, I like to find natural scenes and capture their beauty. I also like to send a message relating to oppression in some of my recent pieces.
Outside of class I love to watch film and view photography. In the near future I plan to set more time aside to practice photography, and I plan to share my work via Instagram. As for film, I hope to make videos consistently and build up a film portfolio in my free time. Next year I willbe attending UC DAAP's Industrial Design program.
I create art because it satisfies my sporadic ideas that I think would be found interesting by other people. After I spend hours on one project, I can also look back at my work and have a sense of accomplishment over what I have done. I also create for the hope that someone will look at a piece of mine and be taken to a happy place within their own mind. My work reflects who I am in multiple ways. First, I like to do more observational pieces, rather than manipulate something into a certain situation that I think would make a cool piece, which reflects my tendency to never interfere. My works can also appear dark, but can also be interpreted in a more comedic way. This also reflects who I am because from the outside I may seem like a dramatic person, but once you get to know me you’d learn that I rarely take any negative situation seriously, i’d rather try to find the happy things.
I prefer subjects that have already been given their place in nature, both living and nonliving. I like these subjects because they won’t ever be uncomfortable with the work that exploits them. I also appreciate the time in which I have to find the subject in its’ own place. When completing my works, I typically don’t know where I am planning on going with the image. I’ll do whatever looks the best at the time while maintaining the original feeling of nature. This technique can reflect my life philosophy as well because rather than plan out every little aspect of what is going to happen, you should do whatever you think is going to work out the best at that moment. If you do something now that might have a negative effect later, you can make another change later on that will bring it to its largest capabilities. Depending on which types of pieces I am creating, the time involved in a piece changes. For my photography pieces, the process of finding my subject matter takes a majority of the time involved, and a smaller portion of the time is involved in slightly altering the original image. For my other pieces, much more time is involved. Thinking of a subject matter takes a large portion of the time involved in these works. After I find a subject willing to be apart of these works, i’ll start the editing process. Composing these images takes anywhere up to a week. Usually, these projects involve one moment where I realize that the technique i’m using is too time consuming and won’t look as nice in the end, and I will restart.
